Loving Ourselves

Why not love ourselves exactly as we are?

“We don’t need to lose weight or grow hair or change anything.
For once we do, we will find other flaws in ourselves to criticize.
The pain we experience from not being at peace with ourselves
exactly as we are in this moment is what we must surrender!”

The “POWER” of massage

Filed under: Health, Uncategorized — themassageprofessor @ 3:58 pm

You have heard the saying, “NO PAIN, NO GAIN”. Well, I believe that statement to be a bit archaic. Why? Because massage is supposed to be a means of healing, not inflicting pain and torture as some clients refer to it.

Don’t get me wrong, there are times when therapeutic massage will hurt, however every effort should be taken to minimize the pain the client feels. Take the time to loosen the tight muscles, apply heat where it’s needed and stretch out those muscles that need lengthened so that they are well prepared for deeper work.

I believe that there are good massage therapists and there are bad massage therapists and last but not least there are “GREAT” massage therapists. What do I consider a good massage therapist? A good massage therapist is one who has been trained in several different modalities and has been doing massage for at least 3 years.

However, let me tell what I believe a “GREAT” massage therapist is. A “GREAT” massage therapist is one who has the training and the experience but also possesses a strong desire to heal, retains a knowledge that there are stronger “POWERS” at work than just his/her own and has intense commitment to the client they are working on. Healing is performed by the client’s own body.

I believe that being a “GREAT” massage therapist by the above definition allows the massage therapist to be an instrument or catalysts of healing, allowing the massage therapist to be more productive and more effective than the average or “good” massage therapist.

“TOUCH” is such a primitive and basic “KNEAD” for all people, even those who hate to be touched. Touch is important to the well being of our body’s, our minds, our spirits.

It might seem that massage therapy is a simple kind of art form. You pay someone to rub your arms, legs, back and neck and then you walk out of the office feeling great from the inside out. That is how simple I want you to feel in what is provided at “Kneading Tyme” Associates.

Do not confuse the simplicity of that statement with the therapist because the therapist must be well trained in the various modalities and continue to study the art of massage in order to provide better service for you, the client.

Check out my web site for prices and other services. I look forward to hearing from you.

So You Want to be a Massage Therapist!

So you think you want to be able to massage a person and make them feel good.  There are so many different types of massage on the market and they all say the same thing, “Ours is the Best!”  I believe that it is the individual doing the massage that makes it the best.  There is more than just technique involved when it comes to a fantastic massage.  There is the passion, the commitment, the enjoyment of doing the massage, physically, mentally and spiritually.

Here are a couple of tips to consider if you are going to take some training to become a massage therapist.

(There are many different types of schools and training programs available to someone who wants to become a massage therapist. To find a program that suits your needs, check your local yellow pages under “Schools” or “Massage Therapy”. You could also do a search online using the phrase “massage therapy schools” or “massage therapy training”, or contact some local massage therapists to find out what schools/programs they attended.

Once you have found some training programs and/or schools, make sure to check out several. Each school or training program will more than likely have a different curriculum and philosophy, and you will want to choose one that will match your needs and personality. Especially important is that the school or training programs meet the educational requirements for practicing in your area.)

JOB STRESS INFO

Filed under: Uncategorized — themassageprofessor @ 3:41 pm

Have you wondered what the health reports have to say about stress?  Well, here are some Fast Facts about Job Stress.

According to the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, they list stress related disorders as fast becoming “THE” most prevalent reason for worker disability.

Over 40% of worker turn over is due to job stress.  (Xerox estimates that it takes approximately 1 to 1.5 million dollars to replace a top executive.  For an average employee, about 2 to 3 thousand dollars per person.)

The 1992 United Nations report called Job Stress, “THE 20th Century Epidemic”.

The World Health Organization called job stress a “World Wide Epidemic!”

Job Stress is estimated to cost American industries approximately 200 to 300 billion dollars annually as assessed by absenteeism, diminished productivity, employee turnover, accidents direct medical, legal and insurance fees, workman’s compensation awards, etc. etc.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report – “Neurotic reaction to stress” is the 4th disabling workplace injury.  (In 1993 over 25 days were lost on average by each person suffering “job stress.”)

According to a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health survey – over 25% of those surveyed said their job was the single greatest cause of stress in their life.

According to the February 22nd, 1997 British Medical Journal study – Job Stress may increase chances of coronary heart disease.

In Japan, the word “KAROSHI” means death from overwork.  It is recognized there as a fatal combination of high blood pressure, over work and “STRESS!”

Job Stress can be both cause and effect of workplace violence and harassment!

HEALTHY? What’s That?

Filed under: Health — themassageprofessor @ 3:06 pm

Greetings All,
I’m back in the saddle again typing away.  Sorry for not posting in such a long time.  Have been out of state and other complications.  Anyway, what does it mean when a doctor, physician or health care specialist declares you “HEALTHY”?

The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) published and article entitled “Stroke in a Healthy 46 year old man.  Was he really “healthy” the day before his stroke occurred?  I don’t believe so and if that is the case, why was he and countless others considered “healthy” according to the medical community.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not implying incompetence on the part of the medical community, but I am trying to understand the word “Healthy” according to their definition.  When a traditional MD declares you “Healthy”, what they are really saying is that you have no abnormalities or show any symptoms that their “Training” can detect.  Most of the time, medical diagnosis has serious limitations because the MD’s, physicians, health care professionals really don’t have the time or take the time to actually listen to their patients.  Sir William Osler, MD spoke of his profession in the following terms; “Half of us are blind, few of us feel and we are ALL deaf!”

We have all gone to the doctor’s office with fear in our hearts of what they will find or tell us.  What will they find?  Cancer? A blocked artery? Degenerating disks? Organ disease? Does it have to be this way?  NO!!!!

So, back to the question, “What does it mean to be HEALTHY?”  Well, according to Webster’s definition of Healthy, it means; “Health is the overall sound condition or function of a living organism at a particular time.”

With the mind, body, spirit approach, health psychology focuses on the overall health of each individual.  As “Health Professionals” we must look at the entire picture of health and how it relates to the whole body and STOP LOOKING FOR MAGICAL CURES AND WISHFUL THINKING!

QUOTE:  “Good health care is not an end in itself; it’s the means to a healthy life.”

NATURAL REMEDY 4 ITCHING

Filed under: Health, Uncategorized — themassageprofessor @ 1:21 pm

My wife and I attended a birthday party for a little lady that turned two yesterday afternoon and while we were there, someone asked the question if I knew of any natural cures for itching that they could try.  I said that I would open my herbal books and explore the mysterious realm of herbal natural cures and get back with them.  Well, below I have listed a few remedies that should be of benefit for all who itch.

I opened up some of my herb books and came across some amazing remedies that might help with itching from stings, sores, dry skin etc.

Here is some of what I found.

(“Words of Wisdom:  When one is pregnant or breast feeding, it is recommended that they check with their physician before starting any type of herbal remedy, either to be taken internally or externally.  The skin is the body’s first line of defense.  It repels and absorbs all sorts of toxins that are in the air, soil and water.  So whether the herbal mixture is to be taken internally or used externally, it will eventually end up in the blood stream, so always check with your doctor before using any herbal remedy.”  These words of wisdom are brought to you by the Massage Professor!)

Itching is a term used to describe a condition which characterizes the uneasy irritation of the skin.  It is during itching that the person feels like scratching that particular affected area.  Itching is not a chronic ailment, but a very common problem that can take place in the whole body or in some specific body part.

Symptoms:
Skin turns reddish
Scaly patches appear
Development of blisters
Scraped skin
Prolonged scratching of affected area

Common Causes:
Sunburn
Chemical contact
Certain infectious diseases
Insect bites
Allergies
Presence of parasites in the body
Dryness of skin
Medications
Cold Weather
Water and Hot baths
Skin diseases like Psoriasis

Some Useful Remedies:

1). Take a bath with a little peppermint or yellow dock.  (It has been proven to be an effective remedy for getting rid of itching.)
2). Take a bath with some cornstarch. (Cornstarch helps relieve itching)
3). Prepare you bath water by adding 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar.  It will provide relief from itching.
4). Prepare a mixture of Aloe Vera, cod liver oil, lemon juice, Vitamin E oil and wheat germ oil.  Apply this directly on the itchy area.

Witch Hazel is an herbal tincture that has multi-medicinal purposes and is extrememly beneficial when used externally to heal problems such as “inflammation of the skin, sunburn, insect bites, bruises, scratches, poison ivy/poison oak, diaper rash, exzema, bedsores and itching.

Witch Hazel may be applied externally either by soaking a cotton ball with some witch hazel on it and placing it on the affected area or by directly spraying it on the skin with the help of a sprayer bottle.

Aloe Vera is another very well known medicinal plant.  It is a cactus like looking plant with sharp thorns on the edges of it’s long leaves.  When cut, the leaves contain a gloopy substance that is wonderfully cooling and  takes the pain away from burns, cuts,s tings and whole range of other skin ailments.

Aloe Vera is one of the few remedies that can be used in concentrated form directly on the effected area of the skin.

Stress – De-stress? That is the question!

Filed under: Health, Uncategorized — themassageprofessor @ 2:04 pm

Many people are seeking easy health cures instead of doing preventative maintenance on their bodies.  They turn to “Alternative” health care.  Individuals who have been unsuccessful in treating chronic health issues with conventional medicine have found relief in the “Alternative” health care professions such as  massage therapy, iridiology, reflexology, Chinese medicine, etc.  Many people are frustrated with prescription drugs and medication that are not providing relief or they are afraid of becoming addicted to the stronger drugs used to control pain.

Why is there a growing trend toward the holistic healing profession?  Because it addresses the social, psychological and emotional stressors of today’s society that can contribute to physical symptoms of disease.  The holistic approach to healthcare can provide help to clients with weight struggles, low energy, digestive disorders, acne, skin issues, constipation, headaches, food cravings and stress induced illnesses.

Prevention through detoxification means less trips to the medical doctor and more energy to live your life! There is an ancient Chinese proverbs that says; “The oxen are slow, but the earth is patient!”

Be patient about your health. Keep working at strengthening your immune system, detox your body from the chemicals that has poisended it, in the food that we eat to the air that we breathe.

My wife and I have started to walk early in the mornings around the neighborhood that we live in and we love to hear the sounds of nature call to us. Lao Tse wrote over two thousand years ago in China, “NATURE does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished!’ We love to watch the geese fly in formation, hear the songs of the Genny Wren, Mocking Bird, Blue Jays, Sparrows, watch the rabbits hop in and out of the neighbor’s yards.

There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature…..the assurance that dawn comes after the night and spring after winter. If you want to de-stress from the demands that society places upon your shoulders, learn how to speak to the earth as the Native Americans did and were wise in the ways of the land and nature. Other indigenous groups spoke to the earth and learned it’s secrets of health and well being so why do we have to be different.

Remember: The earth longs to feel your bare feet massage her and the wind longs to play with your hair!”

Life is meant to “ENJOYED!” Just DO IT!
